Chapter 32

I took the emergency stairs down four floors before I caught the elevator. When I walked past the ballroom it was half-empty. I knew why, and it was confirmed when I got to the lobby. It was filled with gala guests who were, I was certain, trying to find out why the cops and an ambulance were pulling up, sirens blaring, in front of the building. The coatroom was to my left. I took advantage of the attendant’s absence to grab the first overcoat I could get my hands on. Going back the way I’d come, I put the coat on. It was big on me, but right then I didn’t care. Continuing down the hallway to the rear of the hotel, I found a service entrance and left the building.
