Chapter 33

“Nope. No shaking,” he said, stepping back. “Too bad. It would have given me a reason to keep my arms around you.”

Taking a deep breath, I replied, “You need a reason?’

“No. But you might.” He rubbed the back of his hand along my jaw. “I’m not taking any chances on blowing things. After what just went down…It’s too soon. You’re on an emotional high, whether you believe it or not. I will not take advantage of that.”

I knew he was right, as much as I didn’t want to admit it. Physically, I was doing fine. Mentally? Emotionally? As I’d walked back here, while I took care of the details required after a kill, I could hear that scream. And the wife’s whispered thank you. But mostly, because I hadn’t seenthe body, I had imagined what it looked like. It was not a pretty picture.

Coop must have picked up something in my expression because he hugged me again. “Go shower. I’ll stick around until you’re in bed.” He grinned. “I’ll even sing you a lullaby.”
