Chapter 41

Mack laughed. “Now what?”

“I think I got me a sliver in ma ass!”

Mack laughed again and was about to say something when a shaft of light from the trap door illuminated the loft.

Both men stared at each other, frozen. Seth whispered, “Shit!”

Mack covered his mouth to keep from laughing.

They heard voices from below.

Quietly and carefully Seth and Mack untangled and crawled to the open trap door and looked down. Wade and Sandy were in the barn. The men in the loft pulled back from the opening so as not to be seen.

“Hercules needs water,” Sandy said.

“Well?” Wade answered.

“Just sayin’,” Sandy replied. “I’ll get it.”

Mack and Seth could hear the sounds of a stall door opening, the nicker of a horse, and a bucket being moved. A few seconds later they heard water running from a pressure pump. The bucket was returned to the stall and the door was closed.
