Chapter 28

They took a booth at the back and were greeted by an older waitress who eyed them with curiosity. Her red bouffant hairdo gave her a friendly yet competent air.

“You boys on duty or off?” She held her order pad out in front of her as if it were a weapon.

“How’d you—”

“Hey, I know a cop when I see one. Was married to one for forty years until he dumped me for some bimbo. And I’m guessin’ you’re not on duty.”

“Just got out of the hospital.”

“What? Both of ya?”

“Long story but we could both use coffee and some food.”

“Coffee’s comin’ right up. I’ll be back for your orders.” She gave them each a motherly look then trotted off to get their coffees.

“She’s good,” Kord said. “Of course, I think it was you she spotted. You look like a cop. All strait-laced and proper.”

“Yeah, I guess the undercover bad boy can pass for anything.” Doyle chuckled. “But you’re right. She is good. We could use her on this case. I feel like we’re getting nowhere.”
