Chapter 29

“You ever spend any time undercover?”

“N-no, why?” Talorico seemed thrown off.

“Just wondered. You can learn a lot from the kind of people you get to hang with undercover.”

“Like?” The surly detective began regaining his confidence.

“You ever make somebody disappear?” Kord’s voice was calm and low. “I mean really disappear. Like no one even knows they’re gone until there’s no way to find ‘em. No bits and pieces, no blood, no evidence of any kind anywhere. This is what the criminal professionals teach you when you’re undercover.”

Talorico said nothing. He looked up at Kord then quickly averted his eyes.

“I guess we should get on the road, huh?” Doyle said.

“Sure,” Kord said. “Wanna take a ride, Talorico?”

“Go f-fuck yourself.” He turned to his desk and got back into his work.

O’Brien laughed out loud. “Good luck, guys. Need any help, you know where to find me.”
