Chapter 37

“Two years too late.” Kenny shook his head and sighed.

“It’s never too late. Did you get anything out of the victims? Any description or suppositions they might’ve had?”

“One of ‘em told me that he thought the first detectives were involved in some way. Like he overheard something.”

“Involved?” Doyle said.

“I know, right? They might’a been jerks but I doubt they’d have been involved.”

“What did he say he overheard?”

“You gotta remember that he was on meds and had that knock on the head so he was a little loopy.” Kenny had been fiddling with paperwork and now he’d crumpled the papers in his nervous hands.

“Still you must have thought there was something to what he said even if he was on meds.”

“Sure I did, because he was an honest guy. He said he’d overheard them talking in his room. They must’ve thought he was really out of it. But he heard them say something about a nephew and that somebody in the family was gonna protect him. Make sure he didn’t get into trouble.”
