Chapter 54

“His name is Nino.”

“Nino?” Nella began to laugh. “That’s Big Tony Fornesi’s youngest son. He was like a miracle baby, came along when his father was over fifty. His real name’s Antonino but Big Tony always called him Nino and it stuck. His father’ll do anything for that kid. Anything. And it’s good because, you know, Nino’s a little eh.” She put out her hand so it was flat, palm down and tilted it this way and that. She didn’t need to say more. Her intent was clear enough.

Doyle was far from angry. He’d known people like Nella all his life and they might have their opinions but when push came to shove they were good people. He also began to get a clearer picture of things. He immediately made assumptions about Jiggy and Nino and the bashings, which, admittedly were guesses, but he felt he was getting closer.

“Thank you Nella. You’ve been a big help.”
