Chapter 18

Apparently, so did Shelley. She looked at Jack, then Aiden, then Jack again. When she spoke, all nicety was gone, and the no-nonsense sister took control. “Just what is wrong with you two? Fight it out or kiss and make up, but drop this passive-aggressive crap. You’re acting like children.”

“I’m sorry,” Aiden said—to her, not Jack. “It’s nothing, really. We’re not—“

“Fighting, yeah, I heard that one before.” Shelley held up her fork to silence him before he could continue. “No offense, but you’ve both been moody all damn night. It’s like sitting in a room full of teenagers.”

“Hey!” Emma cried.

Her mother shot her a withering look. “I said no offense. I meant everyone.”

At the opposite end of the table, Bob stared at his plate as he ate in silence. Jack spared him a quick glance, but his brother-in-law was obviously letting Shelley handle this.

“What’s the problem?” she asked, drawing Jack’s attention back to her.
