“He used to be a cop,” Mars said. “When he arrested one of the leaders of a gang of drug traffickers, other gang members retaliated by killing his parents. Emmet went off the deep-end. He went after them on his own, eliminating as many of the gang as he could before disappearing. Jonah—he’s one of the handlers, like Alastair—found him two years later in a city halfway across the country. Emmet was an alkie, living in the bottle. Jonah was undercover and ran into him in a bar. From something Emmet said, Jonah pieced together who he was. After all, the story of Emmet’s rampage had been headline news at the time. Jonah took him in hand, got him clean-and-sober again, and recruited him.”
“Damn. No wonder he doesn’t talk about it.”
“Yeah. I probably wouldn’t know his story, but we got paired on a job a couple of years ago and became friends as well as partners. When I offered to take him out for a drink to celebrate when the job was over, he declined and told me why.”
