Vicki dashed over to hug Mars. “Take care of yourself, and stay in touch.”
He hugged her back. “I’ll try. You behave, you hear.”
She grinned. “If you insist. Seriously though, be careful. I don’t want to lose you. Or him, I guess.” She shot a look at Dylan.
Dylan chuckled. “At least I rated an honorable mention.”
“Like she said,” Emmet added, “both of you be careful and keep your heads down.”
Mars saluted, then he and Dylan got into the copter. Moments later they were in the air.
“Where are we headed?” Mars asked the pilot the first time they touched down to refuel.
“East,” the pilot replied laconically. “More than that I’m not allowed to say.”
“Gotta love top secret operations,” Mars grumbled.
After stopping to refuel, they were on their way again. By that time, Dylan was enjoying the flight, even though communication was almost impossible over the noise of the rotors.
At one point he tapped Mars’ shoulder, pointing out the window. “The Mississippi?” he shouted.
