“I…I didn’t want…I couldn’t handle to idea of you seeing me plugged into machines and hitting the pain button every time it got too much and…”

“I get that. Honest I do. But it wouldn’t have mattered to me. Okay, it would have. The idea of what you were going through…” Dylan chuckled softly. “Did the bullet at least miss your rib?”

Mars laughed. “Yeah, it did. Hit every damned other thing inside my gut, or at least it felt like it, but my rib survived intact.”

“Good.”

After a long pause, Mars asked, “When are you coming home?”

“As soon as I can,” Dylan replied emphatically. Then what Mars said obviously sank in. “Home?”

“Well, you know what I mean. Back here. At least for a while, until we get sent off on another job.”

“Mars,” Dylan said quietly, “is that going to be possible?”
