“That was Mr. Layton, I take it,” Zavier said. “Give him my thanks as well, and tell him to quit eavesdropping.”

“I think he was just listening to my side of the conversation.”

“I was,” Van agreed before moving away.

“One question,” Zavier said quietly. “Are you intending to do more than just wrap up the job while you’re there?”

Tate knew what he was asking and replied vehemently, if just as softly, “It was over a long time ago.”

“That’s all I needed to know. Keep me apprised of what happens with the club. Hopefully you’ll find that Ms. Nolan fled town for her own safety, rather than stick around to help you.”

“Yeah, and I will.”

Tate hung up, and turned to find Van looking at him thoughtfully. He was tempted to ask why, changed his mind, and instead told Gwen, “Apparently your father has no problem with you sticking around, since he didn’t order me to put you on the first plane home.”
