Both of us were too hard-headed to be willing to consider changing allegiances, even though I tried to convince him he could do the same thing working for C21, and have more freedom to do it without being tied to all the rules and regs the FBI put on him.

A knock on the door stopped his recollections, much to his relief. He’d gone over the same ground too many times in the months after leaving Van. He didn’t need to rehash them again.

“If you’re ready, let’s go get some breakfast,” Gwen said when Tate opened the door.

“Why aren’t you sleeping?”

“I’m still too hyped,” she replied, echoing Tate’s thoughts from a few minutes ago.

“Me, too,” he admitted. “Shall we chance the restaurant here, or see if we can find somewhere else?”

Gwen snorted. “Having eaten here, I’d rather not take my life in my hands again. Let’s go see if the breakfast place down the street is open.”
