Chapter 38

We went on to talk about other things while enjoying our meal, and then we parted ways after both men gave me a hug.

I sat in my pickup truck, trying to decide whether to send a text or go over to the coffee place to see Trenton. I looked at my watch. It was nine o’clock at night, and the place would be open until ten. I’d just checked the website on my phone. I had no idea if he was on shift. I was hoping that, if I caught him off-guard before he had time to put up a wall between us, I’d be able to get through to him.

I drove over to Java Maven, arriving ten minutes before closing time. I saw Trenton right away when I entered the place, his bright hair a beacon as he and an employee cleaned up in preparation for shutting down for the night.

I strode over to where he was stacking chairs on a table and picked up one to do the same. He was startled to see me there, then became pissed.
