Chapter 16

“I will. Is there anything else?”

“Did you talk with Mr. Vernon?”

“We did, once we located him. He and his wife sold the house and moved out of state five years ago. Obviously, he had no idea what we were talking about.”

Spence’s shoulders sank. “I see. Well someone called, damn it. I told you that. And that the number came up as Unknown.”

“And we told you, there’s no way to find out who the caller was. It could have been a telemarketer for all we know.”

“You think I killed him,” Spence said angrily.

Her reply was, “Call again, if you think of anything else,” before hanging up.

“Yeah, right,” he muttered, turning off his phone. “When hell freezes over.”

He jumped when someone knocked on the back door. The second he opened it, he was enfolded in a tight hug. Then Carol stepped back, looking at him.

“How are you holding up?” she asked.

“I’m…surviving.”

“I’m so sorry. I wish there was something I could do.”

“You have. You made me feel like someone cares.”
