Chapter 40

“I should have packed a toothbrush,” Spence said when Gregg showed him the guest room.

“Not a problem. There’s new ones in the cabinet under the sink in the bathroom. If you want something to sleep in, I’ve got pajamas you can borrow.”

“Thanks. I only need the bottoms.”

Gregg went down to his room, returning with a pair. For a moment they looked at each other, then with a shake of his head, Gregg said, “Night,” and left.

Spence knew that was for the best. After all, Gregg had made it very clear from the start that nothing was going to happen tonight. As he said, it’s not in the cards. But damn it all…Sighing, he got undressed, took as fast shower, then fell into bed, wondering if he’d be able to sleep. 11

Spence shot awake when he heard something banging. For a second he had no idea where he was. Then he remembered, and realized the banging was really someone knocking on the bedroom door.

“It’s unlocked,” he called out, reaching for the bedside lamp.
