“I’ll call you later,” Gregg said when they got to Spence’s house. “To fill you in on what I learn from Olivia.”
“Okay. Thanks,” Spence replied, getting out of the car. He watched Gregg’s taillights fade away before going inside. It took him a moment to realize the security was off, which worried him until he realized Fowler must have disarmed it and the police didn’t know the code to rearm it when they left. “Serve and protect,” he grumbled, turning it on.
“That’s what they’re paid for,” a voice said from the living room.
Spence bit back a cry of fear, looking for anything in the entryway he could use to defend himself.
“I’m no danger to you, Spence.”
“You are until I know why you’re here.”
The man chuckled. “We’ve met before. Did I harm you then?” He turned on the lamp on the side table.
