Chapter 46

“Milking a goat,” Felix said. “What’re you doing?”

“No point in doin’ that. We’re done.”

“We’re not done. We’ll figure something out.”

Stepping nearer, Ronan leaned against the side of a stall. “I can’t figure you out. Why are you doing this?”

“They need milked or they’re gonna dry up. I think that’s how you explained it to me earlier, yes?”

“Not that,” Ronan said. “Did you give Tom money?”

Felix tried to drown out the question by focusing a jet of milk at the side of the shiny metal pail, producing a loud hollow sound.

“Did you?”

“Did I what?” Felix asked. “I can’t hear you over the sound of the milking. Come back later when I’m done?”

Ronan bent and pulled the pail out from under the goat. “You said Tom came here and did some more treatments to the cows. Is he billing me for that?”

“I suppose he could be,” Felix said. “I’m not sure he said.”

“You lying bastard. How much did you give him? You’re not paying for my shit.”
