Why he had been so stupid to open his heart to the Englishman? He didn’t have a single hope that his feelings would’ve been reciprocated. He’d only been following a desire to comfort Russell’s heartbreak, but he’d taken the wrong path. Russell wasn’t gay but, even if he was, Reggie had declared his own love at the worst moment—the end of a relationship that had lasted years.

Why hadn’t he simply acted like a friend, saying something comforting, something other than the stupid, “I love you,” and ruining their burgeoning friendship? If he could, he would’ve rewound the day and taken back his words.

Maybe if he had restrained himself, the night could’ve played out differently. He remembered reading on Twitter once that, after Russell won a European tournament, he and Donaldson, who placed second, had enjoyed a few beers together, as if they had both been winners.
