Chapter 36

“Russell Lee.”

Just hearing the name made Reggie’s heart jump back into his throat. It was his friend Moses

“Wh…what?” he stuttered, flattening himself against the wall.

“You fell in love with Russell Lee,” Moses declared.

Reggie sighed and closed his eyes. His silence said it all.

“I’ve been waiting for you to tell me who that tweet was about since this morning,” Moses continued, “but I know your tastes well enough and, watching the tournament on the internet, I put two and two together.”

Another sigh.

“I didn’t know he was gay.”

“He isn’t.,” Reggie mumbled with difficulty. “It was doomed from the start. It’s just me who…”

A repressed sob broke his voice.

“Oh shit, Reggie. You must feel like crap,” his friend commented, alarmed.

“More or less,” he agreed, rubbing his tired eyes.

“And it’ll only get worse.”

“Thanks a lot for reminding me,” he mumbled.

Out in the hall he could hear the reporters leaving the press room. He looked out but couldn’t see Carlos.
