For a moment, short and ephemeral, he pictured himself with Russell together, in a garden in a Chicago suburb, spending a summer afternoon lovingly talking about golf under the shadow of a beach umbrella.

It was so realistic, it hurt.

“Ah, Ronald Lee was a great man…” Carlos mumbled, finally able to balance the two objects. “Did you tell your parents not to come to O’Hare to pick you up?”

“Shit!” Reggie exclaimed.

Poof.The happy Weston-Lee family daydream exploded like a sticky soap bubble.

“Always the same. I’ll get my stuff from my room while you make the call, and we’ll meet downstairs.” With that, Carlos left the room, grumbling about the extra long-distance charge he’d have to pay during checkout.
