Chapter 60

Reggie sniffed.

“So I broke up with him.” Russell stood, finally meeting Reggie’s. “Those nasty words I said to you on Sunday…they were nothing compared to what I said to him. I never told him how much I loved him.” He looked at the ground again. “I hid who I really was, stupidly thinking I wouldn’t have to lie to anybody that way. And then he died on vacation in the Swiss Alps. I tried to make sense of it…like maybe it was my punishment for turning him away. But I was probably wrong.”

He shrugged and gave a bitter laugh. “Danielle, who had always been a do-gooder, took on the duty of staying by me during my craziness. We’d grown up together, the three of us, so close we were like siblings. I think she thought that if she left me alone, I would’ve ended up hurting myself more than I already was. And Daniel would’ve never forgiven her.”
