Chapter 64

“I didn’t have any intention to participate. I don’t like those things. But at the bar, there was this guy…” His voice broke with shame.

“You don’t have to hate yourself for it,” were Reggie’s comforting words as he nibbled Russell’s nipple.

“It was almost sunrise when I came back home. Danielle knew everything at a glance. She didn’t care about my betrayal, but all the rest. We talked, me at the end of the bed, her where you are now…”

A shiver ran down Reggie’s back. He hadn’t thought about it, but knowing he was in the same bed where Danielle used to sleep wasn’t easy to digest. Sooner or later he would ask Russell to buy a new one. One for them only.

“We started questioning what we were doing,” Russell continued, “how absurd and unjust it was to live like that. But we kept doing it. Until we arrived in Virginia.”

Reggie’s mind went to that Thursday night when he’d seen Danielle with another man. He decided to keep it to himself, but hoped she could be happy, too.
