He thought he heard Vera saying something like, “If he forgot about us, it means it went very well.” He was so embarrassed, the Atlantic wouldn’t be enough to douse it.

“Oh, his home number,” his mother said. “And do you think I should remember it?”

The question hung in the air between them, full of hope. The simplest of questions, hiding the most important one.

Reggie laughed, happy. “Yes, I think remembering it will come in handy.”

He heard her sigh, then she laughed. “Good, I’m happy, honey. It’s wonderful to hear you at peace again.”

“I’m much more serene, Mom,” he admitted.

She let out a sob of joy and he couldn’t help but feel guilty again. “Oh, I’m sorry, Mom.”

“Don’t be silly, Reggie. I’m crying from happiness.”

Meanwhile, a tasty scent reached his nostrils, inciting him to hurry up and end the call.

But his mother had another question. “Is he like you expected?”

“No, he’s much better.”
