Chapter 66

“He’s my best friend,” Russell explained. “I wanted to see how he’d react if I…well, came out…”

“And what did he say?” Reggie held his breath as he waited for an answer.

“To stop acting like an idiot and apologize immediately. And maybe, in the meantime, marry you and ask you to become a British citizen, so at the next Ryder Cup you’d be able to play on our team.” Russell sounded delighted at the idea and raised his glass.

Reggie started breathing again, and he laughed.

“You know, I was afraid he wasn’t going to talk to me anymore,” Russell confided in him, playing with the glass stem.

“People can surprise us, Russ,” Reggie told him, brushing the back of Russell’s hand with his own.

Russell stared off and whispered, “Yeah…I was afraid of so many things for so long, for no reason.”

Reggie squeezed his hand. “I asked Ian to tell you I was sorry, for what I had said…”

“I know,” Russell replied, spearing a mushroom. “He gave me your message.”
