Chapter 23

“Cole, why are you wearing our clothes? Do you not have any clothes of your own?”

He looked away from Oliver, but shook his head no.

“Oh, you poor thing.” Oliver slid over to hug Cole close to him. His thin body was wound tight as a drum. Oliver could feel the muscles of Cole’s chest and abdomen trembling. “It’s okay. Shhh. Breathe.” He found that Cole’s breathing was falling in sync with his own, so he tried to take deep, slow breaths. After a minute, Cole stopped trembling. “Cole, are you homeless?”

“Yeah,” Cole said softly.

“Okay, spill your guts.” Wyatt backed out of the driveway and headed down the street. “You know damn well we don’t need to go Christmas shopping. Why is Cole still at our house and we’re leaving? Did you ask him about…”

“Oh, God no.” Oliver said. “Not after you were all Captain Smooth and left me in a lurch. I didn’t know what you wanted.”

“I wanted you to ask him to fuck. I’m sorry. I chickened out. I thought you’d do it for sure.”
