Chapter 24

“You mean—you mean—”

“I mean, she carried our son for us, in exchange for a large sum of money.” He refrained from saying that the woman who’d carried his child had been Milo’s ex-wife. Sheila had given them Pip, but she had a family of her own now out in Alberta. She sent postcards occasionally. Pip called her Aunt Sheila. One day they’d tell him the truth.

“Wow,” Andre said. “Okay, but who put the bun in the oven?”

“I did.” Rain winked. “Surprised?”

“You had sex with her?”

“Andre, you do realize that your questions are highly personal, right?” Rain popped the last square of chocolate in his mouth.

Andre blushed a little. “No, you’re right. Sorry.”

Rain touched Andre’s big hand and laughed. “It’s okay. I’m used to it.” The bell jingled and he looked up, his heart jumping up in his mouth.
