Chapter 52

“I’m not going anywhere. Just gonna fix Pip some real breakfast…okay?”

Rain blew out a loud breath and sat up. “Thank you. I’m gonna call him.”

“We’ll stay out of your hair then.” Tristan shut the door. Though he knew he’d done the right thing, the idea of Rain and Milo’s possible reconciliation cut him up inside. Trying to stay calm, he read the four words Rain had written on the side of his hand.

I love you, too.

Those pink words gave him confidence. 10

The dinner table was a mess of half-finished plates and wine glasses, and in the background, Rachel was playing her favorite Arcade Fire album. Leaning back in his chair, Rain looked around at the faces of his new friends, both thrilled and surprised to be included in their intimate circle so quickly. Upstairs, Bernie and Rachel’s girls were playing hide and seek with Pip, and every time the kids ran across the second floor, the chandelier above the table shook and its lights flickered.
