Rain took a sip of his wine. Things were clearing up in his mind. Why had Sheila agreed to it? Milo had sworn she’d done it for the money only. “I was twenty-three when she got pregnant and just turned twenty-four in July the year Pip was born.”

“Oh, around the age Tristan was when he agreed to—”

“Why do youthink she did it?” Bernie asked, cutting Rachel off. She took a sip of her wine.

“I don’t know,” Rain said. “She never told me why she did it. But she insisted we use my sperm. She was adamant about it. I always thought it was because of Milo’s family history. Of certain possible inherited genes.”

“You know what I think?” Rachel said. “I think she did it out of love. For Milo. And maybe for you, who knows, right? But I don’t think a woman can carry a child for nine months and go through the ordeal that is birth, for money only. I refuse to believe that.”

“My wife the idealist.” Bernie shrugged and looked at Rain. “Is she in Pip’s life at all?”
