The apartment was a complete madhouse.

Rain looked up from the coffee table, which was littered with make-up, feathers, skin glue, glitter, and candy, and caught sight of Candid rushing to the front door. “Don’t run, Candid!” he shouted over the sound of the chaos in his home. “You’ll trip on your cloak!” He got glitter in his eye and it burned. He rubbed it and looked back at Pip’s beautifully painted face. The make-up was amazing. He’d done a great job. “Okay, just a touch of blue right here. Close your eyes, Pip.”

Pip sat very still, with his face upturned. He was used to having to sit quietly for long periods of time, because Rain had practiced his stage make-up skills on him many times before. “Green, too,” Pip said, without moving his lips too much. “Don’t forget the green.”
