“No kidding, but it works for them.”
We were in the wings at the left of the stage by then. The actors were in the process of rehearsing scene one, with Glenn pacing the edge of the apron as he watched and listened. Mike went over to say something to him, getting a nod as Glenn held up two fingers.
A couple of minutes later, Glenn clapped his hands to get the cast members’ attention. “Detective Harris would like to have a few words with us,” he announced, stepping aside to let Mike speak.
“I’m sorry to inform you,” Mike said, “that Mr. Burton’s death was not an accident as we thought.”
“He didn’t kill himself,” David protested vehemently, glaring at Mike.
“No, he didn’t. He was murdered.”
There was a collective gasp from the actors followed by comments such as “No way,” and “You have to be kidding. Who’d want him dead?”
