Sage told him what I’d said, then asked, “Neverwhere?”

“It’s a book we both loved, by Neil Gaiman,” David told him distractedly, his gaze darting around as he tried to find me. “Where is he? Please tell me.”

“Right there,” Sage replied, pointing to where I was standing.

“Tonio,” David whispered, taking a step forward, his hands held out beseechingly.

I took them in mine, even though I knew he couldn’t feel it. “I’m here, my love.”

He turned white as a sheet and for a second I thought he was going to faint.

“I touched him.” David spoke so softly I could barely hear him. He looked at Sage. “I know you think I’m imagining it, but I did.” He squeezed my hands as if to prove it to himself—and gasped when I squeezed back.
