Chapter 44

“These should work,” Gage said after cracking open the windows in both to see what kind of view they gave of the back of Patterson’s building. “All we have to do is lock the door after we’re inside.” He chuckled. “It might piss off someone who needs to use the john, but I’m betting every floor is like this. They’ll just have to cross their legs and go upstairs.”

“I want to see you walk with crossed legs,” Ash said, shaking his head.

“Damn. You have to go technical on me,” Gage grumbled.

They considered checking the ground floor, too, on the off chance it had the same set-up. But, as Kegan pointed out, even if it did, an open restroom window—since they were pebbled glass—would be very noticeable from the alley, even if was only by an inch or so. That could call attention to their presence.

They got home around eleven. As they got ready for bed, Ash was very quiet.

“Is something wrong?” Kegan asked him.

“No. I was thinking.” Ash shot a look at Gage. “And no wisecracks from you.”
