Chapter 25

“Dad, if you really want to impress Bernice, I know she loves truffles or marzipan. If you take her out to eat, I can suggest a few places. There should be lots in the freezer to choose from if you want a quiet dinner at home. Have you dated since Mom died?”

George looked at his son and smiled. “You don’t mince words. No, I haven’t dated since then. My heart felt empty and I carried a lot of guilt over what I did when I abandoned you and your brother. I don’t think me making dinner for Bernice counts as a date, so don’t go reading anything into it.”

“Are you telling me you’ve been celibate all these years? Damn, I should have bet on a later time.” He chuckled at the puzzled look on his father’s face. “I’m kidding, Pop, just kidding. I have wine in a rack in the pantry. Help yourselves. According to Peter, I won’t be drinking it much anymore.”
