“Yes, something’s different. You never, ever, do sports. Then all of a sudden, you’re at the gym, and you do a 5k? What gives?”

“Nothing gives, man. I just thought I was getting into a rut and wanted to get out of it.” Please let it go.

“I don’t believe you. And why that particular 5k? You never…” And then suddenly, his expression changed to that of someone who finally got it. “Did you choose that race because you heard me talking about it? Were you trying to impress me or something?” His slight smirk was the last straw.

He had hit the nail on the head, but now my defenses were way up, and people were finding our conversation way too interesting.

“Get over yourself, dude. This is notabout you.” Flustered, I got out of my chair so fast, it fell over, causing him to jump back out of the way. I pushed past him and headed for the break room, hoping to get some space. No such luck.

Justin followed me there, closing the door behind him. “Tyson, I didn’t mean it to come out like that.”
