“Piece of ass, that’s all he was. If you see him, go for it. That ass was sweet, but you know me. I’m a loner,” Hunter said, chuckling softly to make the part he was playing even better. Van knew he was slinging bullshit but he wanted to vomit thinking about it.


There was rustling and more whispered words from the other end of the phone. “Okay, man. Yeah, maybe I’ll do that. Check in when you get back, and we’ll catch up on the case. Don’t worry about digging. I got all the info we need. I’ll keep your man busy, too.”


Van’s skin started to crawl, but before Hunter could respond, the line went dead.


“Okay, we’ve got forty-eight hours to find out what the fuck is going down.” Hunter was all business now.


“Why didn’t you get more time?” Van asked, curious and exasperated at the same time.
