“Okay, be safe. Love you,” Matty whispered.


“Love you, too, brother,” Van whispered back and hung up the phone.


“Dude, I’m taking your friend’s truck. I’m going on my own,” Hunter stated, like his answer was law.


“Bullshit! I’m going. I’m not letting you go through this on your own, and you’re not leaving me behind. I know where we can go. We’ll be safe until we can think. Just grab the fucking bags and laptop and let’s go!” Van all but stomped out of the room.


“Listen, Van, I’m a loner. I don’t—” Hunter began, putting up his hand while still grabbing miscellaneous shit to take on the ride.


“We are in this together now! Like it or not, they know me now. They know where I live, or will soon enough. Are you planning on leaving me here unprotected? Are you planning on leaving and never looking back?” Getting close to hysterical, Van realized in another minute or two, he was going to cry.
