Sanders nodded. “Apparently she was in the habit of doing that, then crying on her grandfather’s shoulder when she was shot down by whomever she’d taken a fancy to. At least that’s what Mr. Rose said. So he decided to punish the men involved, starting with Frank Thorne.”
“Jesus. Didn’t she realize what he was doing?”
Sanders smiled dryly. “Miss Carter is not what I would call the brightest woman around. She says she didn’t put two-and-two together because they were just guys she’d talked to in the building—to get to know them better. That she did that with everyone, trying to be friendly.”
Tony frowned. “I wonder…maybe she mentioned them to Alan, like she’d met so-and-so and they seemed nice, and he took it the wrong way?”
“Possible. Hard to tell. As I said, he thought he was defending her honor.”
