Chapter 32

A little over an hour later, Tony left the store feeling as if he’d bought the place out—or close to. He’d stocked up on essentials, of course, but had also gotten steaks, pork chops, vegetables, and a couple of frozen desserts. God help me if he isn’t hungry when he comes over. I don’t think I can eat all this on my own.

When he came into the building through the back door from the parking lot, laden down with his purchases, he saw Alan at the mailboxes in the lobby and called out, “Hello.”

Alan looked up, smiled, and waved. He was still collecting his mail when Tony got to the elevator. Tony pushed the Upbutton, the doors opened and he got on, then held one of the bags out to keep the doors from closing. A moment later, Alan joined him, moving to the back of the elevator, since Tony was by the panel. When the doors closed, Tony tried to push the 2and 3buttons with his elbow.
