“We come bearing gifts,” Pat said over the intercom.
“You what?”
“Gifts. You know, like, presents.”
With a laugh, Tony buzzed in Pat, and he figured Dan as well. “We’re having company,” he called out to Kirk while unlocking the door and stepping into the hallway.
Moments later, he heard voices and footsteps coming from the stairwell then Pat appeared, followed by Dan, Greg, and Neal. Pat had a bouquet of flowers that he handed to Tony. Greg was carrying a six-pack of beer.
“We’d have come by yesterday,” Dan said as Tony stepped aside to let them in, “but we weren’t sure if you were up for company.” Then he spotted Kirk, and shot a look at Tony. “I guess you were.”
“I brought him home from the hospital,” Kirk explained.
“And spent the night?” Dan winked.
“It wasn’t planned, and it was all very innocent,” Kirk replied quickly. “I fell asleep on the sofa.”
