“Ready?” I asked.

He groaned. “God, it’s steep.”

“Nothing in life that’s worth achieving is done easily.”

He rolled his eyes at me. “Fortune cookie?”

I nodded. “The food at the Chinese restaurant is good, so it stands to reason that so is the advice.”

“From a cookie.”

I shrugged. “You’re stalling.”

He pointed up the side of the mountain. “Duh.”

I walked over and took his hand. “All great journeys start with one small step.”

“You could save a lot of money on tuition if you dropped out of college and went to work for that restaurant of yours.”

We started up the steep incline. “But then you wouldn’t get to see me as often.”

He wiped the sweat off his forehead and grunted as we trudged, rocky debris tumbling behind us in our wake. “I’d live.” My brother tagged along. The climb was nothing for him. He even yipped as we climbed, as if this was some great game—and trust me, it was anything but that.
