Chapter 46

“See.”

“The lab,” he said. “You were left there as a baby, so it stands to reason it’s probably been abandoned for about eighteen years.”

“And?”

“Well, someone local probably built that lab or at least worked on it, some construction crew near the lab, near Billings,” he suggested. “I mean, we’re pretty far away from everything out here in Montana. Doubtful the crew came from another state. All we have to do is find a company that did that sort of work, a company that was in business nineteen years ago.”

“Uh huh,” I said, doubtfully. “And how do we find such a company.”

He turned and smiled at me. “Well, they have their cave, we have ours. Plus, I lived in Billings back then.”

The slideshow in my mind flicked over images of all that crap he still had piled in the dark recesses of that cave of his. I groaned, realizing what he had planned for us.

“You start on the right,” he said, not five minutes later. “I’ll sip my coffee and watch.”
