I grinned. Finally, here was some commonality. “You’ll see, sir. If we’re lucky.”

Doug’s groan repeated. “Lucky? Hah! Not the word I would’ve gone with.” He reached his hand around to his back. “I have a sinking feeling that my chiropractor is soon to become quite a bit wealthier.”

“That’s the spirit!” I said with a gleeful clap.

“No, it’s not, kid,” said my boss, with a glare thrown in for good measure. “Not even fucking close.”

We waited until the weekend. Todd worked the shop; we left early in the morning. FYI, Doug didn’t do early well. Eight o’clock, nine, fine, he’d get up. Six, though, was like waking a bear from his hibernation.

“Get. The. Fuck. Out,” he told me syncopatedly as I blew the steam from my coffee up his nostrils and he mashed his face deeper into his pillow.

“Sweetie, it’s time to get up,” I whispered.
