Chapter 64

The gist of the conversation was this: Simon asked him pointblank about the seventeen million, without mentioning the lab or our recent foray into the mountains. The senator asked how he knew about the money. Simon said that it had been recently brought to his attention. The senator’s voice went a bit wonky at that point. To a well-trained ear—or a super one—it sounded like he was nervous. Still, he denied any wrongdoing, saying that he’d asked for the seventeen in case more research was needed. Simon asked him where the other seven million went to then, once the experiment ended. The senator didn’t seem to have an answer for that one, claiming instead that it had been years earlier and that he couldn’t recall.

The convo ended as such: “So,” said Simon, “if the press found out about seven million missing dollars, you wouldn’t care?”

The politician’s faux-smile vanished. “Sounds like a threat, Simon.”

Simon shrugged. “If you have nothing to hide, then no, not at all.”
