Chapter 4

Allowing the current to take him over the spot, he was shocked to see the Blue Bird—Stephanie—caught in a large net and being hauled into the back of a pick-up truck. His Zoom Sight allowed him to verify she was breathing but not moving as two burly men placed her none too gently into the truck bed.

Directing his body downward, the Wisp flew at the truck, and used his powers to raise a smoke-like fog around it. The men in the truck slammed on the brakes and one of them got out and looked directly at Mason in his intangible state, as if the man in the truck knew the Wisp was there. Within the fog and smoke, Mason landed in the truck’s bed, and became somewhat tangible. He worked at the bonds that grounded the unconscious Blue Bird.

Suddenly, from behind, came an electric shock that scattered the Wisp uncontrollably in all directions. The pain stabbed at Mason as he fought for control. At the edge of his thought was the unsettling idea that they seemed prepared for the Wisp.
