Chapter 9

Like there’ll ever be one. Who does this? I’m standing in his front yard in my underwear! I’ve gone completely bonkers!

It was like slamming back into reality. From being an observer while someone else sat behind the wheel to being fully in charge of his functions again. His mouth moved, mimicking a fish out of water.

“Daniel?” Matthew began to descend the steps.

Roscoe danced at Daniel’s feet, a piece of paper in his mouth. Daniel grasped it, wincing at the sound of ripping paper. Words continued to fail him.

Matthew was closer now, concern and curiosity mixing in his tone. “Daniel?”

Daniel licked his lips. Tears burned his eyes. “I’m sorry,” he blurted, dashing for his car. He slammed the door, dropping the notes all over the place, and threw the car in reverse. The last thing he saw as he backed out of the driveway was Matthew staring after him and Roscoe sniffing the box.

Way to go.

The tears started falling before he made it to the end of Matthew’s street. 7
