“No?” asked Liam.
Ezra faced him, his eyes filled with tears. “No.”
Liam inhaled sharply to try and suppress the shock and his own tears. He exhaled again, his breath coming out in shaky bursts. “You won’t even think about it?”
“I havethought about it. I told you that,” said Ezra, his voice soft, almost timid.
“You won’t consider it again? At least think about how important it is for me to have you permanently in my life?”
Ezra looked at Liam in silence, giving no reply.
“You should take me back now, please,” said Liam flatly.
“Please don’t do this,” said Ezra. “Don’t be angry with me.”
Liam looked straight ahead, towards the mouth of the cave. “I’d like to go back, please.”
Ezra pushed himself off the sandy island and into the water. Liam followed, taking Ezra’s hand, and a deep breath.
They sped through the sea, the water masking Liam’s tears. When they arrived near the shore, Liam pulled his hand free of Ezra’s and waded through the shallows to the beach.
