Chapter 99

Akton was not sure when he stopped watching. 48: Talfryn

“How’re you feeling?” asked Talfryn, receiving a grumble in response.

“Stop asking that.”

Talfryn glanced over, saw Akton was scowling. He was bundled up in all his clothes to protect against the cold, and glared through the flurry of large, wet snowflakes as his horse plodded along slowly. They’d spent weeks resting up until well enough to travel, then followed the Kynithremyln and remaining Guard back to Ylenia, trailing behind at the rear. Shanna complained until she realized more than once someone fell back who needed treatment but had been too proud to accept it. And Talfryn liked keeping busy.

“You look different.”

“My hair changes color this time of year,” said Akton, like it annoyed him having to explain why it was now almost completely white. Talfryn had figured that out—after a brief moment of being terrified all the injuries Akton had healed from had aged him decades—but it was the first he’d brought it up.
