Chapter 36

Snow started falling, coating the streets as I headed out of Evanston and into Chicago toward Lake Shore Drive. I don’t know why I went into the city, but I knew I had to get as far away as possible from Evelyn Parsons or Brennan or whatever the hell her last name was now. Traffic was strangely light for a Sunday evening, but I suspected the weather had something to do with that. Although the temperature had been over forty earlier in the day, it had dropped below freezing and the road conditions had deteriorated along with it. Also, the light snow was expected to pick up overnight, so anyone with any sense was probably staying off the roads.

When I reached Lake Shore Drive, I quickly realized that I should have stayed off the roads myself. The wheels of the Audi slid as I changed lanes, and I should have slowed down, but I didn’t until it was too late.
