Seconds later, Xavier came walking back to him. “So, everything all right?”

Billy tried to smile through his guilt. “Yeah. That was my mom. Everything’s cool.”

Xavier studied his face. “You look sad.” He reached out, gently touching the edge of Billy’s shirt near the waist. “Everything is gonna be okay, Billy.” He looked around and leaned in a little closer. “In about four hours, you and me are gonna be by the ocean. Okay?”

Billy leaned his head to Xavier’s chest, feeling the strong thump of his heart. “Yes…let’s go.”

Holding Billy’s wallet, Xavier stood knee high in the foamy Atlantic Ocean.

The waves broke gently against his calves and the afternoon sun shone down on his face. He couldn’t stop grinning at the sight of Billy, who, fully dressed, swam, or at least attemptedto swim, several feet from him, deeper in the sea. “Careful,” Xavier screamed again. “Watch out for the undertow.”
